Biography

Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Erick Sánchez is at the forefront of redefining contemporary landscape painting. Using materials in his paintings and installations that include raw liquid and powder pigments, acrylic mediums, emulsion, glitter, recycled rubber, glass beads, copper and aluminum leaf, black magnum rock, graphite, urethane, stainless steel, gold, silver and aluminum powder, Erick experiments with both traditional and non-conventional materials achieving the distinctive, rich textures that have come to characterize his current practice. Erick emerged as a self taught artist after helping a friend paint a mural in 1996. In 2002, he studied at the San Juan Art Students League in Puerto Rico with Luis Ivorra and Rafael Rivera Ortiz, and was later awarded a study scholarship with artist Bruce Dorfman for an intensive summer program at The Arts Students League of New York (2005). He was the recipient of the Artist in the Marketplace Award from the Bronx Museum of Art, The Fantasy Fountain Painting Grant, and the Jean Gates Foundation Painting Award. His artist in residencies include The Ruth Katzman Vytlacil Residency in Sparkill, NY and The Marchtz Residency Summer Program at the Institute for American Universities in Aix-en-Provence, France. Sánchez’s artwork is part of the permanent collection at the Tuscon Museum of Art (AZ).

Artist's Statement

“[My work] is created as a visual manifesto- a consciousness-raising display about the perils of man-originated ecological disturbances and the urgency for environmental conservation. [I want] to give shape to a fragile space consumed by globalization, industrialization, global warming, and other consequences of human behavior and the concomitant natural disasters which extinguish life and nature. These explorations are impactful, deliberately cautionary in tone, and executed with assertive brush strokes and inventive medium combinations.”
