Biography

Fidel Rodriguez started painting at a very early age. When he was six years old, his father asked him what he wanted as a birthday present, and his request was to be allowed to draw all over his bedroom walls. Since then he has never stopped. His earliest paintings and drawings were influenced by the “Tauromaquia”, inspired by his grandfather who was a bullfighter. He studied Graphic Design at the age of 17 in Caracas, Venezuela, and his prodigious talent eventually earned him a UNESCO scholarship to study Fine Art at the Armando Reveron University Institute. Additionally, he was one of the youngest artists accepted at the Fifth National Biennial of Drawing in Caracas, and by 18 he was represented by Ars Forum Gallery in Venezuela. Since then, Fidel worked for several years as a scenic artist for an Italian corporation in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. In 1996, he moved to New York City working as a set designer, but quickly gained his first serious gallery representation by Monique Goldstrom in New York in 1998. Fidel Rodriguez currently spends his time between New York and Chicago where he now resides.

Artist's Statement

“Natural elements cyclically transform each other in a process that drives them through and into their environment, bonding their energies and giving them new qualities, bringing them into harmony and balance. Highlighting this transmutative effect is my starting point. Human beings pass energy through time and each other by means of interactions affecting our psyche, behavior, and spirit and have done so for generations. As water feeds a tree and fire returns it to the soil, we are bound to this cycle. Oil, paper, plaster, resin, wood, and canvas are the mediums I use to translate this eternal cycle we see through nature and human life itself. The symbols, numbers, and letters represent a transformation of this spirit and universal pattern. My research is that language, in order to feed that esoteric meaning in my art.”
